And you only had to because all the Tower Records and Wherehouse Musics shut down.

We do this all the time, you get free digital downloads with the disc anyway.

Related: it’s significantly cheaper to buy many books in paperback than Kindle version from amazon.

It also wasn’t available on cassette.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, who has used CDs already on the day it’s released?

Does it? I can't even recall the last time I saw a chain record store. Still see indy shops every so often.

I was late to the digital age. When MP3s and digital downloads were taking over the planet, I still liked “to have the CD in my hand, to have the box and the folder,” etc. Now? Aw, fuck it. Get it on iTunes. It’s just easier, and I’m not enough of an audiophile to care any more.

I switched everything to digital music about 15 years ago in college, mostly because it was free, Napster, never forget. But then started buying CDs again soon after, still do every month.

I was late, too. Even thought I have ripped everything into iTunes, I still like the CD. It saves me from burning one to take out to the garage.

I used to do the same thing with vinyl. While everyone was buying their albums on cassettes, I was buying records and putting them on cassettes myself. That way I had a copy at home and a copy for on the go.

After ripping my CD collection to my computer, I considered getting rid of them. Then last year, my external HD tanked and I lost my entire iTunes library. Thus began a massive project to re-rip every CD. I’m glad I kept them, and now they are boxed up in a closet while I await the next disaster. Despite my love of the older media, the first click-wheel iPod I received was the single electronic device that changed my life (before the smartphone). When I would go on a long drive, I would spend time standing in front of my CD collection, trying to decide which ones to take. Once I got the iPod, I took them all.

I’m still burning my record collection to CDs just because I have so many blanks. You can only pass blank CDs off as Xmas ornaments for so long before people realize you’re just a cheap sob.

If it makes you feel any better, I’m 19 and I do it for my most favorite artists.

I still do this sometimes, especially for music from Sweden/Denmark that iTunes can’t or won’t make available in the U.S. I’m sure Bengans Skivbutik and imusic.dk appreciate the extra business.

Someone probably got an advance copy for review. I see this happen in the book world, where my local bookstore buys a used copy from a literary critic and promptly offers it for resale on the title’s release day.

I don’t know but I was unaware Bob Mould was making a new album. Thank you for piquing my interest.

We have one at the major mall here in Hampton Roads. For the most part, though, you’re completely right - they’re all dying out.
